I messaged DAM Useful Publications about using different colorcheckers. Here is the reply I received:

“While this – the less expensive version- is probably fine as a general color guide, or doing a basic white balance. The thing it won’t do is allow you to make a color profile for your camera. The camera profile allows you to make a more accurate scan of prints with a standard setting.

Many people are happy to digitize without the profile. It’s really about your objectives and how important a very close match to the original is for you.”
