Apple recently introduced significant updates to their Photos app in iOS 18 meaning big changes for anyone who organizes photos using a Mac or iPhone!
Pro photo manager and Apple expert Paul Einarsen provided an in-depth overview of the changes in a recent Cathi’s Pics Live presentation. Watch the video below or read on about how Apple has changed the Photos experience with this latest update.
The new Apple Photos interface represents a major shift from the previous multi-level experience to a more streamlined, “flat” design. Rather than drilling down through menus and categories, users now find the layout has completely changed. The updated app features a top two-thirds library view with a bottom third dedicated to navigation and customization. Some of the key new features highlighted by Paul include:
- Collections Curated by Apple.
- The app now surfaces specialized collections like “Recent Days,” “Trips,” and media types like videos and screenshots. These help users quickly access relevant photos without having to search through their entire library.
- Personalized Pinned Collections.
- Users can customize the order and contents of the navigation panel. This means you can pin your most frequently accessed albums, people/pet groups, and other shortcuts for easy access.
- Enhanced People and Pets Identification.
- The facial recognition technology has been significantly improved! The app can now automatically identify people and pets across multiple photos, even when their faces aren’t fully visible.
- Flexible Filtering and Sorting.
- Users can choose to view their photos sorted by capture date or date added. Additionally, you can filter the library to only show certain media types like just photos or videos.
Throughout the presentation, Paul encouraged attendees to think about their own photo management habits and how the new interface could streamline their workflows. He demonstrated how the customization options allow users to tailor the app to their personal preferences and most common use cases. Overall, the updates to Apple Photos in iOS 18 seem aimed at making photo organization and sharing more intuitive and efficient for users. Although reviews of this new design are mixed, by blending Apple’s curation with personalized controls, the iOS experience can be efficient and practical for those wanting to keep their photos organized and accessible.
