All of the above! (eventually) Thanks for responding.  In this case I have a client that is an Apple User and wants to keep within the system.  I explained that iCloud is a syncing service but not a good back up.  At this time, she does a regular backup with passport. I am recommending 2 different external drives (One onsite, One offsite) and then would like to recommend a cloud services.  I hear many of our colleagues discuss backblaze, but I am sure my customer will have questions about Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive etc. As I understand it those are still more a Sync Services unless you change some of the settings.  With that said my next customer will be someone interested in access/sharing services. In this case I would want to compare things like SmugMug, Flickr, Forever etc correct? I was hoping not to reinvent the wheel if people already have an educational chart to discuss with customers.  Thank you!

Adam and Paul-  Thank you as always for sharing your feedback and expertise.  I am prodding with lots of questions about Apple Photo because I am about to take on my first customer and I need to determine which workflow to follow.  I know that even if I share information about metadata etc with clients there will be some that want to stay in the Apple environment no matter what. However this then bets that any future generations will also be using the apple products and that is not a guarantee (as my brother just shared with me, he is not an Apple user and won’t be an Apple user).  So then the question is do I just do all the work in Apple for my customer but ALSO do a “neutral” photo hub for future generations?   If I do it this way, I am back to the question do I export pictures out of Apple first, or will metadata data be retained etc.  My bet is, I will have to try all the different workflow and have each in my back pocket depending on the customer’s desires.

Paul, if I understand your response, you are saying that I can export unmodified originals plus a sidecar to retain metadata.  This would be the best case scenario. How are you doing this?  Does LR simple recognize that the particular side car goes with that Jpeg or do you always need to maintain those files together.  I keep thinking that sidecar files can be easily shuffled away from their jpeg file.

Again thank you to both of you, I am excited to get started!

Thank you so much for your response!  Yes it is my own library. I have already removed my duplicates and now was going through similar pictures which I have alot of.  I just finished and I spent approximately 7 hours on the entire process and removed over 14,000 pictures from my library.  Interesting to hear you do not go through similar pictures for clients, I just assumed that was one of the services people provided but yes can be difficult to do.  Do you remove blurry or obviously bad pictures (over/under exposed) etc?  If you do what process would you use (any software)?

With Photo Sweeper, is the only variable you change the Time Gap? Do you change Same Aspect ratio or matching level?  Lastly now that iPhones produce HEIC files you may have a smaller size but better resolution (correct?). How would you account for that?

            Thank you!

              Thanks Adam!

Under option 1, I went to File Menu and looked at Export.  Is there a way to highlight all my pictures in the library (50,000 +) all in folders/albums.  I assume this would take a long time if I had to do this with a customer.  In this case would I just recommend they upload their pictures to iCloud and then assess their pictures remotely?

Under option 2, I went to Originals/Master files.  My Masters folder when opened only has a subfolder called 2017 (see screenshot attached). My Originals folder has a lot of subfolders and I am not sure I can tell if indeed all 50,000 pictures are present.  Would I copy these pictures keeping them in their folders (see screenshot).

Any option for me to export my pictures retaining my folder/album structures that I have in Photo Library (see Screenshot).  Ultimately I would like to export my pictures, De-Dup, put metadata in etc and then import them back into APL in their file structures.

              Thanks! Patricia
